With the increasingly rapid advancements in Machine Learning, fuelled by technological leaps in Artificial and Business Intelligence, what will be the future role of Data Scientists?

Given the relatively short history of conceived and applied AI, the discussion of “what happens next” is escalating in the Data Science community. It was only as recently as 1956 that computer scientist John McCarthy first referred to “Artificial Intelligence”. Today, AI has become a driving force in broad applications for everything from data-driven decision-making to self-taught machines across a multitude of industries.

Will bots eventually empower themselves with the capability of automating many of the tasks Data Scientists currently handle? Will new AI technologies have the capability to take over the role of Data Scientists, or just revolutionize what they do and how they do it? And, of course, if there is a forthcoming evolution on the horizon, the big question: When?

The widespread answer to “when”, at least within the Data Science community, seems to increasingly be “not anytime soon”. Short-term, Data Scientists will continue to provide the insights businesses require to make important decisions — being a sort of bridge that links data to solutions. And they will continue to be responsible for adding context, understanding of business and market conditions and even a bit of relevant emotion to the analytics.

However, as technology advances and these “magic” bots begin to take over more than just mundane tasks like lower-level data interpretation and visualization, Data Scientists can begin their transformation to the future immediately. If, that is, they are prepared to become newly specialised.

In other words, the future for Data Scientists may largely depend on how well they learn to adapt and redefine themselves. Essentially, that will require a re-examination of what is a rather broad view of their responsibilities into far more specific roles, using the very intelligent assistance of smart bots to free themselves for more creative, innovative tasks.

New demand is also predicted to emerge for those who fully understand how advanced AI and machine learning technologies can productively effect the work of Data Scientists. Knowing how to leverage automated data to bring new meaning to their insights will keep Data Scientists gainfully effective long into the future.
